Mother Miguel Mountain: Views from the Reservoir to Tijuana

This one was spontaneous. Seven of us and one happy dog did the 5-mile Mother Miguel loop by Sweetwater Reservoir in Chula Vista, and it quickly became a favorite.

A snake-like trail winds up the mountain, there’s some steep downhill, and there are lots and lots of great views. You see Sweetwater Reservoir from all the angles, from the top and really close, plus the ocean, Point Loma, Coronado and all the way to Tijuana.

Our favorite moment was sitting just above the lake on the back side of the mountain. Almost everyone goes up and down the front side, so we had the whole view to ourselves. And the people! All seven of us had an accent from a different country. That’s what I love about San Diego, and about our group.

What to expect

The trail starts on wide dirt paths with views of the reservoir, then snakes up the mountain in switchbacks. Near the top it gets steeper and rockier. At the summit there’s a “rock house,” a big pile of stones that hikers built, with a flag on top.

From the summit, keep going around to the back side of the mountain. It’s quieter, and part of the loop runs close to the lake.

Tips

  • Explore the back side. Find a spot just above the lake and enjoy the view with no one around.
  • Wear shoes with good grip. The steep downhill can be slippery.
  • Bring plenty of water. There’s almost no shade.
  • Start early. Especially on warm days.
  • Bring your dog. Leashed pups are welcome.
